'Wonder Woman' Review

It's safe to say that the DC Extended Universe hasn't got off to the best of starts. with 'Batman V Superman' and 'Suicide Squad' failing miserably and 'Man of Steel' being nothing more than an average film. Due to this, a lot of pressure was on the shoulders of their latest film to bring some credibility to the series. 'Wonder Woman' brings life to the DCEU by blowing its predecessors out of the water and in doing so, takes its place amongst the hierarchy of superhero films.

Before she became Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was an Amazon Princess called Diana, a warrior who was brought to life by the God Zeus. Diana grows up on an island hidden from the rest of the world until World War 1 spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes on the island. After saving Trevor, he tells her of an ongoing conflict that is killing many people all over the world. Believing this to be the work of the evil God of War Ares and that she can help end this trouble, Diana decides to go with Trevor to help fight and try to end the war.

Patty Jenkins makes her long-awaited return as a director in a feature film with only her second film and the first big budget movie that she has helmed. Due to her lack of involvement in feature films, it was questioned whether it was a good idea for Jenkins to direct such a big budget and socially important film. Once the credits start rolling, all of those doubts have been put to bed as 'Wonder Women' succeeds on many levels.

It's been made clear that DC should look to Marvel as inspiration for how to handle their cinematic universe, with it looking like DC have been rushing their projects to catch up with their competition. 'Wonder Woman' does what no DCEU film has done before. It is handled with care and precision as every detail is used to help progress the character and the story. A bit more time could have been spent on looking at exactly what Diana's powers are - as someone fairly new to the character, there were some surprises that seemed to come out of the blue. In comparison, 'Wonder Woman' unsurprisingly does a better job than the DCEU's previous origin stories, creating an instantly likable, entertaining and charismatic lead character from the beginning.

When it was announced that Gal Gadot was cast as Wonder Woman, I was very skeptical. I was yet to see her in anything as a lead character and thought of her has someone who would only be capable of providing a supporting role. I never thought that she would be considered to be one of the first female leading roles for a modern superhero movie, especially with all the pressure that would come with that responsibility. Thankfully, I was proved wrong. Any queries I had surrounding the Israeli actress were removed after watching her fantastic performance as the Amazon princess. Gadot shines throughout the film, whether she is adapting to 1910's Europe or showing great humour and wit and of course, in the action scenes. Fans of the character can relax knowing that their beloved heroine is not only in good hands but is the shining star of the franchise so far.

Of course, Gadot is not alone in her quest to bring credibility back to the DCEU. The only Chris not in the MCU Chris Pine plays off Gadot as Steve Trevor, an American Spy who crash lands on Diana's island and brings her to the war effort. Pine and Gadot share excellent chemistry as Trevor is tasked with explaining and guiding Diana through 1910's war-ridden Europe. Due to the chemistry from the pair, the moments where the two are just traveling and getting to know each other are just as enjoyable as the superhero action that you are expecting. The likes of Robin Wright, Ewen Bremner and Connie Nielsen provide good support but don't have a patch on Gadot and Pine who really steal the show.

With superhero films, the downfall is usually that the villain is not that strong and this, unfortunately, is the case for Wonder Woman. The film actually has three villains, General Ludendorff (Danny Huston), Dr. Poison (Elena Anaya) and later on in the film Ares (David Thewlis) but there isn't enough focus on any of them, especially the latter. Ludendorff and Dr. Posion are the main targets for Steve Trevor and the war effort but there isn't much from them that is memorable. We aren't given any reason to really fear these characters or feel that they can be a threat to Wonder Woman which makes it obvious how the eventual encounter will end up. There is some intrigue behind the Dr. Poison character which I look forward to seeing more of in the future. There is a twist surrounding Ares and that he has been masquerading as someone else all along. For me, this twist didn't work too well and took me out of the film as I couldn't imagine a God just sitting in day to day life as some sort of politician. I guess it does make sense that the God of War would surround himself with people sending others to war whilst they stay and twiddle their thumbs.

What 'Wonder Woman' does so well is create so many morally complex situations. Steve Trevor is constantly faced with difficult decisions, made harder due to Diana's rash decision making and lack of knowledge. The actions of the characters really affect what happens in the next scene to drastic effect. These moments really take a toll on Diana which makes her seem human and that she truly feels the effects of what she has indirectly caused. This is something that isn't often developed too well in this genre but 'Wonder Woman' really succeeds with this element.

With such a high-budget superhero film like this, you expect the action to be very good and that is true for the most part. Jenkins does well with the action although does seem a bit obsessed with the slow motion effect during scenes. These are a bit overplayed and do make it feel quite video game like at times but the most important part is that it is all easily visible and won't give you a headache. A problem that I do feel with the DCEU's action, in general, is that the final battle is just punches and people being sent for miles rather than something that seems choreographed. That is just a personal preference but it did disappoint me that the climatic battle did end up like that. Other than that, there aren't many complaints. The over the top action scene is absolutely incredible which is made even better due to Rupert Gregson-Williams score that had inspiration from the Wonder Woman theme in 'Batman V Superman'. Those who enjoy the typical superhero action films will enjoy Wonder Woman as the standards are met for the general audiences.

I'm surprised by how good 'Wonder Woman' actually was as I certainly had doubts surrounding the film and its lead actress. Thankfully, they've proved me wrong big time and even more impressively, restored my faith in the DCEU. In a time where a superhero film is released every other month, 'Wonder Woman' does a great job at feeling fresh and maintaining a high quality. An important film that hopefully opens more doors for female filmmakers and inspires many more

Final Verdict =

'Hell or High Water' Review

After a tragic summer movie season, 'Hell or High Water' looks to be here to get everything back on track. From the director of 'Sicario' comes yet another American thriller that looks to be one of the highlights of the year. With Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine starring, 'Hell or High Water' is one of the best films of the year and one you should be rushing to see.

Toby (Chris Pine) looks to create a better life for his son who lives with his ex-wife. He looks for the help of his short tempered, ex-convict brother Tanner (Ben Foster) as the pair set out to carry out a series of heists against the banks that are about to foreclose their families ranch. Standing in their way is Marcus (Jeff Bridges), a Texas Ranger who is close to retirement but is still looking for that last top case. As the brothers set out to carry out the final heist, they will have to come against the law like never before as Marcus isn't ready to bow out just yet.

Chris Pine and Ben Foster shine as The Howard Brothers who look to make the bank pay for their unfair debts set by the banks themselves. Pine plays the younger brother Toby who looks to create a better life for his son and sees this as the best way possible. He is a lot calmer than his hot head brother as well as much smarter which allows him to carefully plan their attacks on the bank. Foster plays Tanner, an ex-convict and is much more of a loose cannon compared to his brother. Tanner is ruthless and will use fear to get the job done at any means necessary. The pair are perfect for each other as they compliment each others weaknesses, allowing them to be a very effective duo. The relationship between the two is shown incredibly well as at times they might not like what they are doing and judge each others actions, but overall understand that it was for the best intentions. There is a true bond you feel between the two as Pine and Foster show this phenomenally well.

Jeff Bridges stands in the way of the troublesome duo as Marcus, a near retiree who looks to crack one last case before riding out into the sunset. Alongside him is his partner Alberto Parker (Gil Birmingham) who is often the butt of Marcus' jokes as we get a sense of comradery as they stand for what is right. Bridges stands out showing why he is still considered as one of Hollywood's best as he looks to try to think one step ahead to anticipate the next move of their targets. A lot of his work consists of Bridges just talking but the dialogue is solid throughout allowing him to excel. There are only four main characters throughout the movie but all of the supporting characters do incredibly well. Everyone plays their part and even to the smallest of characters, they really deliver. This all combines to make the feeling even more realistic.

The art of dialogue is most definitely on show here as it combines with the terrific performances to create an authentic Western feeling. The dialogue doesn't seem generic or cheesy as those involved deliver them very well. Through a lot of the film, it is a lot of talking which may put some people off. However, the dialogue is so intriguing and relevant to either the story or characters that it grabs your attention at all times. Everything said is either entertaining or useful to what is going on or learning about the intriguing characters. The writing is very clever with how it sprays out humour in the film as well in what turns out to be surprisingly funny. It never goes overboard but the relationship between the brothers and partners allows there to be funny moments spread throughout the movie, adding to the feeling of comradery once again.

With the film setting up two tag teams against each other, you'd be surprised to see that only Pine and Bridges interact with each other at the very end of the film. This may seem odd but it works perfectly as the relationships and the cat and mouse chase makes the finale much more impactful. If you're looking for close encounters between the two sets then you will be disappointed but the film delivers on so many levels that it does not need to do so. It's Coen Brothers esque with the likes of 'No Country For Old Men' baring close similarities to how this film is set up and it really delivers. The film is beautifully structured as it showcases what the brothers are up to early on and builds up slowly but effictively.

The story overall is fairly morally complex. You know that what the Howard brothers are doing is wrong and that they shouldn't be able to carry out these acts. However, I feel a lot of people could relate to the fact that they are scrambling to make funds and with an added incentive against the bank, you kinda root for them to succeed. Toby clearly wants to create a better life for his family which adds onto it as well. Tanner doesn't really have much of a reasoning other than the adrenaline but there's just something about him that you respect and what him to succeed as well. However, you are never against Marcus as the lawman looks to bow out with one last victory. His partnership with Alberto as well as his near retirement make you want to root for him as well. This all combines fantastically to the final act which is full of tension where you don't know what is going to happen.

Overall, 'Hell or High Water' really deserves all of the praise that it is receiving. One of the best movies of the year which you should check out immediately. The story was expertly executed as the performances are all fantastic. You don't want to miss this one and I really hope it gets more recognition, potentially even around Oscar season.

Final Verdict =

'Star Trek Beyond' Review

The third of the new era of Star Trek movies is finally upon us after 2013's 'Into Darkness' that despite getting good reviews to start with, has recieved some sort of a backlash. Now we have 'Beyond' to correct the fans gripes and it certainly seems to have done so.

After beingg tricked into a surprise attack, the Enterprise is destroyed and has to crash land on a mysterious planet. The attack came from Krall (Idris Elba) a lizard like creature who prolongs his life by stealing the life out of his victims. To complete his devious plan, Krall needs an ancient artifact that is aboard the ship. The crew are split up due to the attack so Kirk (Chris Pine) must reunitte with Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of his crew and escape the planet before utter devestation is caused.

Some people had a problem with 'Into Darkness' saying that it wasn't fun enough. Well with director of Fast 5 and Furious 6 Justin Lin taking the helm of the franchise, you could almost guarantee that this movie would most definitely be fun. You then add the fact that Scotty himself Simon Pegg co-wrote the film and you can pretty much be sure that this movie would be fun. Both deserve huge credit as well as Doug Jung who co-wrote with Pegg.

Lin made it clear in the Fast and Furious films that he could handle action very well and create a very fun action atmosphere. You can see his talents in 'Beyond' as the action is superb and really has fun with itself. The sci fi elements allow Lin to really let loose which creates some great moments including the scene with Kirk on a motorcycle that seemed really silly in the first few trailers. At times, the action does seem a bit too shaky but it doesn't last for too ling to really become a problem.

I'm a big fan of Simon Pegg and I would probably say that he is my favourite comedy actor. For him to have co written this movie was ideal for me as I could expect some of the great quality that we have come to expect from him. The comedy within the writing works incredibly well and even makes the film a lot funnier than most of the comedies this year. The jokes and one liners land very well and the banter between the characters is incredibly enjoyable to watch.

It's only been recently that I have gotten into Star Trek and I'm really happy that I did. One of the main reasons for this is due to the amount of interesting and great characters within the series. Chris Pine is excellent once again as Captain Kirk as one of the standouts in the film. He portrays the character incredibly well by both being a leader and taking the fight on head on but also by being very thoughtful and making very well calculated decisions. Pine's charisma allows him to really flourish in 'Beyond' in what is another gret performance from him. A big strength in the film also comes with the other supporting characters played by the likes of Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and also by the late Anton Yelchin. Everyone brings it in this movie and there really isn't a weak point in the crew as you care and are interested about all of the characters. Individually they all have traits that make them stand out and they have really done a great job to make you care about the whole team in this new rebooted franchise.

My favourite part of this movie comes with the focus on Spock and Bones relationship. Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban show fantastic chemistry in this film and are hilarious together. The pair bicker with each other despite having each others best interests in mind which creates a highly enjoyable viewing. The two bounce off each other very well and had the whole audience chuckling which was great. There's a lot more screen time for Urban's character 'Bones' which was great as he really adds a lot to the film which was missed in 'Into Darkness'.

Also shining in the film is Sofia Boutella as Jaylah who is one of the most badass characters of the year once again following her success in last years 'The Kingsman'. She was both very clever and also could handle herself against enemies with a good backstory creating a great heroine. I look forward to seeing more of her in future instalments as she is a truly unique and interesting character that stands out from the crew.

One gripe I do have with the film is with the villain. Idris Elba does a good job as Krall despite genuinely being hard to understand at times- and that's coming from a Scottish person! He did seem dangerous but at times they could've pushed it a bit more to make him truly terrifying and one to be feared. However, at times it seemed as if he was missing for large parts of the film. The ending as well seemed a bit lacklustre as he lost a bit of his power and seemed to be dealt with far too easily although it did have quite a nice twist on the film.

RIP Anton Yelchin

Final Verdict =

A great addition to the franchise and one of the most entertaining movies of the year. 'Star Trek: Beyond' is a blast and you will have a great time watching this flick!

So have you seen 'Star Trek: Beyond'? If so what did you think of it? I hope this review was useful for if you were planning on seeing the movie. I also hope that if you choose to see it that you enjoy it as much as I did. Once again, thank you for reading my review, it is much appreciated!
