My Top 10 Films of 2017!

So 2017 has come and gone, so everybody is rushing to put out their best and worst of the year lists. I know you've probably seen dozens of these already, but why not look at yet another? With that, here are my 10 favourite films of 2017, enjoy!

This list is also based on films by their U.K. release dates, so if there's a film you feel is in the list that shouldn't be by date, this is why. 2017 was a pretty good year for film and was an improvement on 2016 in most regards, especially in terms of blockbusters. With such a competitive year, there were, of course, many films that narrowly missed out on my list. Due to that, I'd like to give a shoutout to some honourable mentions that were very unlucky to miss out on my list:

Wind River
A Ghost Story
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Personal Shopper
and Logan

So now that's out of the way, let's jump into number 10!

10.

At number 10 is the first of two Netflix films on my list and is what I believe to be the best Stephen King adaptation of the year, Gerald's Game. 2017 was a pretty good year for the horror/thriller genre, with films such as Get Out and Split being fantastic in their own right. Yet, it was this that really got under my skin, with its simple plot that is handled magnificently by director Mike Flanagan. Carla Gugino puts in one of the best performances of the year -whilst mainly handcuffed to a bed - in a story that creates a terrifying situation but also is a fantastic character study.  The film gets really dark at times and is very unsettling, especially when we explore Gugino's characters past. For fans of horror, definitely give Gerald's Game a watch.

9.

Coming in at number nine is an early U.K. release that did very well during award season in 2017, Hacksaw Ridge. Mel Gibson's return to the director's chair was a very successful one, as Hacksaw was one of the years most powerful and finely crafted films. The film focuses on an unlikely war hero and focuses on his determination to save lives rather than take them. The action scenes are incredibly realistic, creating many brutal moments, but Hacksaw is a true testament to the human spirit and retells this miraculous story wonderfully. Andrew Garfield was fantastic as the stuttering Desmond Doss in a film that gets great performances from Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington.

8.

Paddington 2 is by far the most surprising film of the year for me and is one of the best times I've ever had at a cinema! This film is pure fun and it really caught me off guard. I expected a fairly enjoyable film that would satisfy me for just under 2 hours. However, the film exceeded all expectations, with a great story filled with fun, interesting characters and silly antics making this one of the most purely enjoyable family films of recent times. This already impressive British cast was improved with the additions of Hugh Grant and Brenden Gleeson, who are fantastic in their newly acquired roles, whilst the returning Ben Whishaw and Sally Hawkins are ever so delightful yet again. A complete joy that will have you laughing, tearing up, gazing in awe and on the edge of your seat, Paddington 2 is a very worthy addition to this list.

7.

The second Netflix film to make my list is Bong Joon-ho's Okja, an extremely emotional story that really caught me off guard. The first half of the film explores the relationship between young child Mija and this super pig Okja, as we create an emotional bond with the two. The second half is much darker as it explores celebrity depiction, animal cruelty and greedy conglomerates which mirrors the real world oh so closely. This film features an impressive cast of stars who all bring it as very conflicted characters which is something I really appreciated with the film. The characters whether good or bad are not all morally perfect - with the exception of Mija and Okja - and creates for some interesting dynamics and only showcases the innocence of the two main characters furthermore. With such sensitive subject matter like animal cruelty, there are some very emotional moments, none more so than in the finale. The film is a Netflix original and is the kind of film that needs support in order for Netflix to continue making strides with their original films.

6.

Edgar Wright is one of my favourite filmmakers and has created some of the best genre-blending films, with hits like Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Due to this, I was eagerly anticipating his latest film Baby Driver ever since it was announced. It isn't my favourite film from Wright but that is no discredit to the film as this is one of the best-crafted action films of recent years. The use of real stunt drivers, choreography and music create some of the most enjoyable action scenes of the year in a film that was oozing of originality. The ensemble cast works perfectly well with each other, creating an interesting dynamic which kept you guessing which way the story will go. Wright has yet another success under his name and continues to showcase his abilities as one of Hollywood's best and most creative directors.

5.

Cracking into the top 5 is Call Me By Your Name, which I feel has the best male performance of the year from Timothee Chalamet. This gay-romance film is both beautiful and heartbreaking as the story follows a young Italian boys first ventures into love. Despite the nature of this relationship, the story is universal and there are things that everybody can relate to and even see reflections of themselves in. This makes the film even more powerful and emotional for the viewer, which is backed up furthermore by fantastic performances and soundtrack. There are two scenes in particular that will stick with me for a very long time due to their powerful effect, including the end credits where Chalamet showcases his talents. The way he conveys his emotions without saying a single word is arguably the best piece of acting this year and is a fantastic ending to a great film.

4.

At number 4 is perhaps the most unique film of the year and certainly of this list, Raw. This French/Belgian coming of age, horror film really surprised me with just how good it was, as it follows a young woman's first experience at veterinarian school. With this, she faces many urges but not all that would be expected in a coming of age film. The film actually uses cannibalism to explore temptations, rivalry, sexuality and many others in this environment which leads to some very startling and incredibly grotesque moments. Garance Marillier is fantastic in the lead role as we slowly see her character Justine descend from a top student into a flesh-hungry, jealous nightmare. This was a very challenging performance which Marillier excels fantastically well in Julia Ducournau's feature film debut as a director. As both a fan of coming of age and horror films, this was a perfect blend for my tastes and one that I won't forget anytime soon.

3.

Manchester By The Sea may just be the most realistic film of 2017 and it uses that authenticity to power its often bleak and emotional story. The film follows Casey Affleck - who gives the performance of his career - and how he struggles to deal with past and present traumas and problems. As the film goes on, we get more information about this deeply troubled character, and with each addition of information, there is a powerful punch behind it. Kenneth Lonergan's script is near flawless as the film is never ever dull and constantly has you hooked, despite it being miserable a lot of the time. It must be said, though, that the film does have some great humour within the film to stop it from being all doom and gloom. This is a film that could turn people the wrong way but I loved every moment of this film and was hungry for more once the credits started to roll.

2.

At number 2 is Christopher Nolan's war epic Dunkirk. Dunkirk certainly won't go down as one of the best character-driven movies but certainly will in terms of a cinematic experience like no other. This film is completely immersive with flawless sound design, cinematography and practical effects that help create an ever so realistic setting. An impressive cast featuring the likes of Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy and even Harry Styles provide rooted performances, filled with emotion, fear and struggle at every moment whilst stuck in this situation. The narrative structure itself is very unique and was a great way for Nolan to explore different aspects of this event, with linking them up simultaneously. For me, this is up there with Nolan's best work and one that I'll be rewatching soon in 2018.

1.

At number 1 and way ahead of everything for me is La La Land. By comparison, nothing ever came close to overtaking La La Land as my favourite film as I was completely swept away by this film. The music, choreography, performances, cinematography, costume, set design, everything was just perfect. This is now one of my favourite films of all time as I loved every moment of this film. I was humming the soundtrack for days and think about it constantly as it is a truly magical film. This happens to be the film I've seen the most at the cinema as I could not get enough of this movie earlier this year. Ever time I talk about it, it just makes me want to watch it yet again. The film has resonated so deeply with me unlike any other this year which makes La La Land, undoubtedly, my favourite film of 2017!

So that concludes my top 10 list of films released in 2017! I hope that everyone had a great year and hope for all the best in 2018! Let me know what your favourite films of the year were and also what you're looking forward to seeing this year. Also, keep your eyes out for my top 10 worst films of the year which will be a lot harsher list! Until then, thank you for taking the time to read my blog, it is much appreciated!

'La La Land' Review

Sometimes a film gathers so much hype and praise that it simply doesn't reach expectations. This is most definitely not the case with 'La La Land'.

Mia (Emma Stone) is an aspiring actress who crosses paths with Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a struggling pianist who wants to open his own Jazz club. Living in Los Angeles, the two grow close together and have to make a choice between focussing on their love life or their biggest dreams.

We're only 4 films into the year but we may have the best film of the year decided already. Damien Chazelle brings yet another great movie based around music after his success with 2014's 'Whiplash' but he goes one step further this time by creating a full-scale musical. From the opening credits, Chazelle makes you feel as if you are watching a classic musical with the opening featuring how the film will be presented on screen. Although the film is set in the present day, you have that feeling of watching a classic. However, that is the case, just that it is a modern classic. You know the saying 'they don't make films like this anymore'?. 'La La Land' proves that this is not the case as it stands up there with the best of the best.

The film starts off with a beautiful one shot lasting over 5 minutes as the song 'Another Day Of Sun' plays out on a bridge with all those stuck in traffic participating. This was a very fun scene which also showcased Chazelle' skills as a very talented director. This opening scene was just a taster of what was to come throughout the rest of the film.

To start off, 'La La Land' is a musical, a comedy and a drama all at the same time. Usually, when a film comes out that handles different genres, usually one overshadows the others. Not the case for 'La La Land' as all three play equally strong parts in this marvellous film.

It is no surprise to me that 'La La Land' picked up awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (City Of Stars) at the Golden Globes and it would be a safe bet to back them for the Oscars too. The film is filled to the brim with great songs with composer Justin Hurwitz doing a great job creating catchy tunes and setting the mood perfectly. This is one of these films that you are going to be humming for weeks to come, especially the likes of 'Another Day Of Sun' and 'City Of Stars'. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone both lend their talents to the music in this film making it seem like there is nothing that these two can't do. This is backed up further once you see the pair dancing, with many different styles on showcase within the film. The musical side of this film really is perfect as the music, performances and choreography all come together to create some truly magical scenes. Chazelle is also able to work well with the backdrop of Hollywood in these scenes making the film look superb in the meantime.

'La La Land' also took home the award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, with Ryan Gosling winning Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy and Emma Stone doing likewise in the Actress category. The pair's chemistry works tremendously well in this film, especially in the comedy moments. The two play off of each other's reactions very well early on in the film as they are fairly cynical to one another as they first meet. This leads to one of the best scenes of the year as the pair looks for Stone's character Mia's car, where the two show their talents in comedy. As the film goes on, there are more jokes that are very cleverly crafted, more so than most comedies nowadays. Stone first burst onto the scene in comedies like 'Superbad', 'Zombieland' and 'Easy A' and that experience in the genre is evident here. Gosling as well shows his talents coming off of the criminally underseen 'The Nice Guys', where he continues to show that he is one of the best talents Hollywood has right now. The comedy combined with the upbeat music makes you have a constant smile on your face as you just want to see more of these characters interacting with one another as it is glorious.

As effective as the music and comedy aspects are within the film, 'La La Land' also delivers on the dramatic level. The story basically follows two young dreamers, Sebastian who wants to open a bar to play real Jazz and Mia who wants to become an actress. The film highlights the struggles of people following their dreams and shows that it's not an easy journey. More so on Mia's side, we see the characters doubt their dreams, even to the extent of possibly giving up on them. Sebastian also goes through tough moments as he lets his dreams slip by doing something that he doesn't particularly want to that also visibly changes his characteristics. This leads to the film showing the pair having to make a decision between going all out for their dreams or the love and companionship of each other for life. This is very complicated for the duo but that's life, especially in those industries. This brings the fun down a level as it gets serious with Stone and Gosling excelling, showing tremendous range in this film. The finale of this film is extremely well done, I won't spoil it for you but it is emotional and a great ending to a truly great film.

It is hard to believe that director Damien Chazelle is only 31 as he handles film like a veteran. Chazelle creates a truly beautiful film, setting up many shots that are breathtaking. Whether it's on the streets of California, movie sets or anywhere, the movie looks fantastic at all times. The camerawork and long takes are a pleasure to watch as Chazelle pulls them off to great effect. Again, his win at the Golden Globes was very much deserved. The film's beauty is also backed up by the beautiful set and costume designs in this film. The characters are sharply dresses which also brings back a classic feeling to the film as from start to finish, the film is gorgeous.

It's not very often that a film like this comes along. A film that is as equally exciting and entertaining as it is artistic. 'La La Land' is a modern classic and a film that we will look back on in awe. A truly special film that deserves every single bit of attention that it is getting. Expect to hear a lot about this film at the Oscars after it just broke the record for a number of wins at the Golden Globes.
'La La Land' is a must see.

Final Verdict =

So have you seen 'La La Land'? If so, what did you think of the film? I hope that this review was useful for if you were planning on seeing this film which I cannot recommend highly enough. Once again, thank you for taking the time to read my review, it is much appreciated!

My Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies for 2017!

As 2016 draws to a close, its time to look forward into 2017. Like in 2016, the new year will see the box office being dominated yet again by superhero movies and also, Star Wars. Hopefully, the quality of these films and blockbusters as a whole will improve after a lacklustre year. 2017 also brings some fresh, smaller film especially as award season flourishes. In saying that, here are the 10 films that I am looking forward to most in 2017.

Of course there are more movies I am looking forward to than jut these ten so here are some honourable mentions:
  • Justice League
  • Wonder Woman
  • Alien: Covenant
  • Logan
  • Kong: Skull Island
  • Hacksaw Ridge
  • War For The Planet Of The Apes
  • T2: Trainspotting

Now lets get onto the list!

10. John Wick: Chapter 2

Starting off the list is the sequel to the hit 2015 action film 'John Wick'. Keanu Reeves is back as the master assassin as directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch look to create another hit action film. Sequels are a hard thing to do but with a very promising trailer being released recently has made critics and fans look forward to this one. If this is anything like the first then we are in for a treat as the 'Gun-Fu' style action movie was one of 2015's biggest surprises. After a year where the likes of 'Jason Bourne' disappointed, 2017 needs a strong action movie to get things started and 'John Wick: Chapter 2' looks set to deliver.

UK Release Date: 17th February

9. Beauty and the Beast

After the successes of 'Cinderella' and 'The Jungle Book', it seems as if live action remakes of Disney classics are going to be a yearly thing. If they are all at that same quality then there is no problem and I fully expect 'Beauty and the Beast' to follow in their footsteps. The tale is already magical and it will be amazing to see these characters brought to life, with a brilliant cast playing them. Luke Evans seems to have been a great choice as Gaston with Emma Watson looking like a dream casting as Belle. If the film can do the animated classic justice then it will be a marvellous film with great visuals and music. Definitely one to look forward to considering Disney's recent record.

UK Release Date: 17th March

8. Blade Runner 2049

1982's 'Blade Runner' is now getting a sequel after 35 years. This may make many groan but you just have to look at the talent involved in this film to make you have faith in it. For one, Harrison Ford is returning to the 'Blade Runner' series, as he reprises his role as Rick Deckard. Taking over from Ridley Scott is Denis Villeneuve who has been one of Hollywood' best directors of recent years with 'Prisoners', 'Sicario' and of course, 2016's hit movie 'Arrival'. The rest of the cast is also very impressive with the likes of Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto and Dave Bautista joining Ford. This continuation has all the chance to fail but also has all the tools to make a hit.

UK Release Date: 6th October

7. La La Land

The film that is being tipped to dominate during award season i yet to come out in the UK unfortunately. Good news is that the film is out in early January so there is not long to wait for this one. 'La La Land' looks to be one of the most lively films of the year as critics have been praising this film very highly. Ryan Gosling again stars in this movie and is joined by Emma Stone with both being tipped for Oscar nominations. There is a lot of buzz around this film and with a great trailer being released, I cannot wait to see this one.

UK Release Date: 12th January

6. Baby Driver

There has only recently been some information released about this film as it seems to still be in production. However, there is one big reason to why this film is so high up. 'Baby Driver' will be the 5th feature length film of my one of my favourite directors, Edgar Wright. With Wright you are guaranteed quality as he looks to create an action thriller that will have his classic comedy moments. With a cast featuring Lily James, Jamie Foxx, Jon Bernthal and Kevin Spacey, there seems to be a lot to look forward to with this one. I haven't been disappointed with Wright's work yet and I don't expect that to happen come August.

UK Release Date: 18th August

5. Dunkirk

Much like the last addition to this list, the influence of the director has given a film a high spot in my list. Chritopher Nolan is back with the war film 'Dunkirk' and it looks incredible. This story looks powerful with gritty realistic action and who better than Christopher Nolan to direct this? With Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and recent Oscar winner Mark Rylance starring in this film, it looks to be a worthy addition to Nolan's filmography. The trailer for this film has already blown many away and the finished article cannot come quick enough.

UK Release Date: 21st July

4. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2

'Guardians of the Galaxy' surprised us all back in 2014 a the rag tag team of superheroes brought a fresh and fun adventure. The group are back once again with director James Gunn also returning. With the trailer delivering good laughs and action, the film looks certain to be a success. With new cast members such as Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone joining the already impressive cast, GOTG2 looks set to be just as fun as the first one. Lets hope for just as good a soundtrack this time too. GOTG2 looks to offer something different to most of the superhero films and with 2016 showing the genre's fatigue, a movie like this is much needed.

UK Release Date: 28th April

3. Thor: Ragnarok

Again, a director being a part of a film has lead to a high placing and it couldn't be any truer for 'Thor: Ragnarok'. I don't really care about the two previous Thor movies but with Taika Waititi on board, I cannot wait for this one. The New Zealander has produced some of the best comedies in recent years. The inclusion of Mark Ruffalo's Hulk and Benedict Cumberbatch's Dr Strange, the film looks to have created a buddy road trip film that certainly has me excited. The movie has the potential to be the bet yet from Marvel as its story looks set to give us something completely different within the genre. Once a trailer drops for this film, it will be the topic of conversation for months to come.

UK Release Date: 27th October

2. Spider-Man Homecoming

In a year that look to be dominated by superhero movies yet again, it only makes sense that the one I'm looking forward to most is from my favourite superhero, Spider-Man. Tom Holland did a great job in Civil War bringing a new look to the Spider-Man character. We will finally get to see Peter Parker as a teenager going through high school as they look to have nailed the wise cracking side of Spider-Man. Michael Keaton will alo be bringing life to the villain 'The Vulture', a character who we haven't seen before on the big screen. Hopefully with the property in Marvel's hands, we will get another great Spider-Man movie.

UK Release Date: 7th July

And my most anticipated movie of 2017 is.............
